MEDICATIONS FOR COMPLICATIONS

Serious complications from sinusitis can cause blindness or even death. Since the advent of antibiotics, complications have fortunately become much less frequent. Still, when they occur, eye and brain problems—the two most severe forms of sinusitis complications—require early and aggressive intervention.

Eye Complications

Orbital, or eye, complications almost invariably require hospitalization for further evaluation and treatment. Since bacteria (most frequently, Hemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Streptococcus pyogenes or S. pneumoniae) are the usual cause of orbital infection, antibiotics are the mainstay of treatment. Your physician may also prescribe topical nasal vasoconstrictors such as Afrin—medications that relieve nasal congestion and improve breathing. Steroids are not recommended because of potential complications. Although antibiotic therapy is usually successful in the treatment of the less serious forms of orbital complications—periorbital cellulitis and orbital cellulitis—surgery is often required in more severe cases.
